Runway suits creators who need to generate or transform individual shots and then select, revise and assemble the results. It offers multiple image and video models and editing tools, but a subscription allowance is a production constraint: every attempted generation can consume credits even when the shot is not usable. For a project that mainly needs a narrated video assembled from stock footage, compare the end-to-end workflow with InVideo AI rather than comparing model names alone.

Estimate the credit budget before starting

Runway lists 625 monthly credits for Standard and a 12-credit-per-second rate for Gen-4.5 video. At that published rate, four attempts at a five-second shot would consume 240 credits (4 × 5 × 12), leaving 385 of that month’s Standard credits for other work. This is a planning example, not a prediction of output quality or a fixed cost for every model. Audio, model choice, duration and other tools may change usage. Standard monthly credits expire at the billing date; purchased credits follow different rules.

The Free plan’s 125 credits are a one-time deposit, not a monthly refill, and videos made on that plan carry a watermark. That makes it suitable for checking the interface and a narrow concept, rather than budgeting a finished multi-shot campaign. A small production test

1. Write a shot brief with one subject, action, camera movement and intended duration.
2. Generate a short version and record credits used, attempts and why each output was accepted or rejected.
3. Check continuity with the next shot, legibility of any text, visual artifacts and whether a conventional edit is still needed.
4. Compare the total accepted seconds per credit with your actual output needs before changing plans.
